If I want to focus fire, I use the "attack my target" command. Ranged characters stay at range and use the abilities I set to preferred, and the party keeps the enemies they are attacking targeted. I have never followed the common advice to leave most abilities disabled, because I find that the AI tends to use enabled and preferred abilities appropriately, as long as they have enough stamina/mana reserve to cast the higher cost ones. I set all the companions to follow themselves, sometimes set one to follow me so I have fire support, and in tactics, I set the abilities I want to use to Preferred. I never have trouble with the AI doing what it's supposed to do.
